Subject: Bicycle NSW: Advocacy News for BUGs

Dear NSW BUGs,

Well, hasn't it has been a busy and productive time! ...with many
dedicated advocates running (well, cycling!) all over the place to be part of
the multiple events that have been happening in NSW, and especially
Sydney, recently. Thank you for your help and support! :O)

Bicycle NSW AGM - New Board
This year's Bicycle NSW Annual General Meeting, held last Saturday 4
November, was well attended with over 50 Bicycle NSW Members. The new Board
has been elected and consists of the following 9 members: Richard Birdsey,
Brendan Bouffler, Jenny Burn, Andrew Dodds (Vice President), Robert Hamilton
(President), John Holstein, Tim Hoskins (Treasurer), Greg Krix and Geoff
Martin. The profiles of the Board Members can be found at http://
www.bicyclensw.org.au/AGM.html. We look forward to the year ahead with fresh
ideas and enthusiasm.

CPF Bicycling Achievement Awards 2006
A belated congratulations to Doug Stewart, Ryde Working Group Convenor
with Bike North, for winning the 2006 Promotion of the Year (Honorary
Category). Doug was recognised for his outstanding & ongoing contribution to
cycling and Bike North over 10 years. Fantastic! In addition, Councillor
Norman Jew, a passionate advocate of cycling, received an Honourable Mention
for his contribution Towards Cycling by a Politician. We'll have to work hard
together to ensure even more NSW advocates / BUGs will win CPF Achievement
Awards next year!

NSW Local Government Association Conference 2006
Champion cycling advocate Fiona Campbell, along with Cycling Promotion Fund's,
Rosemarie Speidel, made a big impact at the LGA Conference, over the weekend of
28-29 October! For the first time, the conference included a Cycling
Information stand, thanks to the City of Sydney (half-funded) & the CPF. Read
all the details in December's edition of PushOn (pushon.com.au). Now, it's over
to you... the BUGs, to leverage from all the positive work they made with your
councillors ...by making contact with your local councillors regarding the
increasing level of support for cycling and how cycling helps reduce greenhouse
gas emissions, as well as improving health, liveability and community.

Sydney Metro SubRegional Strategies
The Sydney Metropolitan Strategy (www.metrostrategy.nsw.gov.au) divided the
metropolitan area of Sydney into 10 SubRegions that combine local government
areas with similar issues and challenges in terms of planning for growth and
managing change. The NSW Government will be publishing draft SubRegional
Strategies for each of the 10 SubRegions.
This is a key opportunity to grab! BUGs, cycling advocates and other
interested parties are asked to make a submission in response to these draft
plans, in order to ensure that cycling is given due consideration and written
into the policy documents, as well as being asked to contact other BUGs in your
SubRegion. See December edition of PushOn (www.pushon.com.au) for more
details.

Transport article for Village Voice, Canada Bay Council area
Ben Douglas, Deputy Editor of Village Voice Newspapers, will be running a story
on all aspects of transport in the Canada Bay Council Area in the lead up to
the NSW State Election. He is keen to hear from any cycling advocates
(individuals or groups) in that area, that are interested in having their say
from a cycling perspective. Contact Ben Douglas on 9018 3595 or
ben at villagevoice.com.au.

Glebe Foreshore opening - this Saturday 11 November, 2-4pm
The City of Sydney and Clover Moore invite you to help celebrate the opening of
the next stage of the redeveloped Glebe Foreshore - which includes new
dual-purpose cycle and pedestrian pathways. Take a ride down on Saturday to
The Anchorage Site, (Glebe Foreshore, Rozelle Bay) - there will be a free BBQ
and jazz band, as well as a prize draw to win a bike. http://

Bicycle NSW Ride Leader Workshops - Volunteer Actors Needed
Volunteer actors being sought! for Ride Leader Training Sessions for Sydney
Metro BUGs (Saturday 2 December at Sydney Olympic Park) and NSW Regional BUGs
(Saturday 9 December in Kiama). Would you like to assist the prospective ride
leaders by being an 'actor' for the course? This involves role-playing certain
situations (e.g.being an injured rider) to enable the assessment
of trainee ride leaders, to see how they deal with & manage situations. You
will be required from 12pm until about 6pm and snacks / afternoon tea will be
provided. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Donna
Little by email on dlittle at bicyclensw.org.au

Have a great weekend...out in the sunshine on your bikes! Kind regards, Kate
