LIBS SUPPORT GREENWAY CYCLEWAY VISION IN INNER WEST
A NSW Liberal Government will strongly support the Greenway project in Sydney’s
Inner West, Shadow Planning Minister Chris Hartcher and the Liberals’ Inner
West team announced today.
“The Liberals will commit $300,000 to delivering a key part of the Greenway
vision – the Parramatta Road underpass,” Mr Hartcher pledged.
“A completed Greenway will be the key cycleway between the southern and
northern parts of the Inner West along the Hawthorne Canal and beyond. It is
the main missing link in a continuous route from the CBD to the Bay Run at
Haberfield to the Cooks River Cycleway to Botany Bay.
“The current Parramatta Road overpass is very difficult to ride, unlit, and
strewn with broken glass and graffiti. By building a quality and safe
underpass, we will significantly increase ridership from the Inner West to the
City and to the Cooks River Cycleway,” Mr Hartcher said.
“Greenway has huge potential to create a new sustainable transport corridor in
the Inner West. Within a 3 minute cycle of Greenway, there are: 25 churches; 9
Scout Halls/community centres; 8 shopping precincts; 20 large parks; 2 swimming
centres; 3 bowls clubs; 24 schools and/or educational centres including three
high schools; 5 City Rail stations, and; numerous places of employment,” Mr
“We will also see what can be done to get Greenway traveling along the old
goods line from Summer Hill south,” Mr Hartcher said.
The project will be funded – subject to grant application - over two years
through the NSW Department of Planning’s Metropolitan Greenspace Program. The
Liberals’ commitment matches and doubles the contribution to be made by
Leichhardt, Marrickville and Ashfield Councils.
Peter Shmigel, the Liberals’ candidate for Balmain and cycling spokesperson,
said the Greenway underpass will deliver benefits for sustainable
transportation, physical fitness and the environment, and reverse negative
trends under Labor.
“Labor has stopped pedaling when it comes to cycling, including Budget cuts,
abolishing the RTA Cycling Unit, and failing to build hundreds of kilometres of
promised cycleways. Government spending on cycling is the lowest of any State
and this is reflected in the lowest ridership and lowest bike sales. Through
the Greenway project, the Liberals show their commitment to making NSW the
Premier cycling State,” Peter said.
Ramzy Mansour, the Liberals’ candidate for Marrickville, said he was pleased
that a completed Greenway will create a safe ride to school and healthier
lifestyle for kids at schools such as Dulwich Hill Public School and Lewisham
Bill Carney, the Liberals’ candidate for Strathfield, said that many local
cyclists have been lobbying him for better ways to get to and from the Cooks
“I am pleased that the Liberals have not only listened but acted and will
deliver positive change. The only way to get positive change in NSW is to
change Government,” Mr Carney said.
