This was posted to a BUG list in Sydney. Eric "half a b-double" Roozendaal
is the NSW roads minister.

Below is a copy of my letter to Alan Evans. A copy has been forwarded
also to Eric Roosendaal.
I feel it is really important to hit the problem people with the
message as well as chatting amongst ourselves.
I have sent a heavily editied version of this to the SMH. Even if they
don't publish, your letter gets counted when thay are measuring public
response to issues.
So every one of us should make sure we put digit to keys and get our
personal message to the people who work for us - the NRMA and the
government on this occasion.
Happy cycling!
Dear Alan.
As NRMA Gold Member 0406254 I am writing to express my profound
disappointment and disagreement with your statements recently reported
RE: provision of, and expenditure on, cycleways.
I am a keen cyclist as well as a keen motorist. As one of a
fast-growing number of likeminded people, I wish to minimise my use of
my car in favour of pedestrian, cycle and public transport journeys.
In spite of my highest motivation I am too often hampered in my
efforts to cycle for many daily journeys because of inadequate
cycleway provision in terms of availability, safety, quality and/or
continuity. I contend that for many short and even medium length
journeys cycling should be promoted as an alternative to driving. To
this end, I accept that in appropriate circumstances my use of the car
should be controlled by road design and road rules, in order to
encourage my use of the bicycle.
I urge you to understand the changing demographic of motoring. With
the sales of bicycles now far exceeding the sales of motorcars, I
believe that the "Roads" reference in the name of our august
association now, more than ever, must acknowledge the fact that
responsible motorists want more "Roads" for cycling, and a
commensurate ultimate rationalisation in the size, nature and number
of "Roads" for motor cars.
I will always need to drive and want to enjoy my motor car, but not
when it unnecessarily results in the destruction of landscapes, air
quality and the amenity of our cities and rural areas. Building
extensive, safe and high quality cycle ways is no longer an option for
our transport mix; it is a responsibility. I urge you and the NRMA to
reflect the new reality.
Thankyou for reading my letter, Alan. I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
John
Fellow CAMWesties,
here is an article I received from the Wheels of Justice mailing list quoting a CAMWest discussion. Amazing how stuff gets around.
Have a look at the two websites listed below as they are both worthwhile subscribing to if you want up to date comments
There is a CAMWEST group on the Sydney Cyclist site.
