Graham,
I agree with you, but you can bet your last dollar on the fact that there would be a registration fee and some other form of tax added to the costs as well. Then because it is compulsory, third party would go up to cover the risk instead of the modest amount we pay through BNSW & Cycle Cover. Add to this a tax to cover the loss of revenue from petrol excise & etc. In the end, we would probably find ourselves paying nearly the same to register a bike as it costs to register a car.
The next move would be to licence riders, which leads to learners permits and riding schools and the formation of a new level of bureaucracy, the Roads, Traffic & Velocipede Authority & the establishment of Motor & Velocipede Registries all over the state where there will be a lack of cycle parking & heaps of lycra clad loonies smelling of sweat and petrol fumes offending the nostrils of the motorist in there trying to register his motor car. This will lead to line rage in the registries as the motorists will claim that they are being forced out of line by velocipede riders in silly clothes who only pay 50c road tax because of the weight of their bikes, while they pay much more and should be entitled to priority.
This would then lead to cyclist only lanes in the Motor & Velocipede Registry which cries from the motorists that they owned the registry before the cyclists came in and took over the lanes. Then the Government would decide to privatise the lanes and put a toll on the express lanes and reduce the number of motorists lanes forcing more motorists to pay the toll. This will cause motorists to do the "rat run" and try and circumvent the system by using the cyclist lanes.
Sound familiar?
But let's remember, it was not too many years ago that pedestrians, cyclists, horses and public transport dominated the roads and will not be too many more before they do again. History may well record that the glorious age of the motor car was a brief 150 years and that our love of them destroyed many great countries and deprived mankind of an almost free source of energy, had it been used wisely, in that same short time, a familiar trait of the human race. There's plenty of it. Let's just use it up as quickly as we can.
End of rave.Comments please.

In response to the commentator that added his views after the NRMA
response as a cyclist I am happy to pay reg for my bike. If we all look
at our rego slips you will note it is assessed based on the tare weight of the
vehicle, given my bike only weighs 9kg I’m happy to pay rego based on a
9kg which amounts to about 0.50c incl of GST. I would be interested to see other’s
views on this point & hopefully it may also silence a few of the critics on
bikes should by licensed & pay rego

In response
to comments by Alan Evans, Chair of NRMA, in recent times in the Sydney
Morning Herald, Bicycle NSW has initiated a short survey on their website. I
invite you to have a look at www.bicyclensw.org.au, follow the links and
complete this short survey. You do not have to be a member of BNSW.
Remember, the more responses, the more valid the data is.
